Rotors vs. Sprays tutorial

Many homeowners and some "professionals" do not understand the principles behind Irrigation systems and the importance of proper design and installation. Did you know that installing rotor heads and spray heads on the same zone is a no - no? In this tutorial American Outdoors will explain the reasons we do not advise mixing sprays with rotors.

When properly installed a rotor type sprinkler head will deliver approximately .5" to .6" of water as measured in rainfall in a one hour cycle. With this in mind, setting the timer to run a rotor zone for a time sufficient to deliver .75" of rainfall per week requires setting the controller to run the rotor zone for 45 minutes to obtain .5" of rainfall.

Conversely a spray head is capable of delivering 1.5" of water as measured in rainfall in a one hour cycle thereby requiring only 20 minutes of runtime to obtain our goal of .5" of rainfall per cycle. So you see that the spray heads are capable of nearly triple the rainfall values of a rotor head. This excess of rainfall is why it is not recommended to mix both types of heads in a common zone.
